The works in the group exhibition jetzt und nie (now and never) at Halle für Kunst Lüneburg demonstrate a particular sensitivity to the conventions of experiencing and representing time. Past, present, and future are understood within dominant patterns of time perception as part of a linear, progressive movement that is perceived as a solid continuum. Despite constant changes, everything seems the same. This apparent standstill coincides with the speed of increased productivity demands and the ever-faster sequence of comprehensive crises.

The exhibited works by Vera Palme, Klaudia Schifferle, Mania Godarzani-Bakthiari, and Clara Hausmann complicate linear, progress-oriented models of temporality, trace their materializations, and explore the formal consequences of their representation. They experiment with moments of slowness, failure, delay, and sluggishness, with ruptures, fractures and lags, with asynchronies and contradictions.

The works reflect on how their own creation is conditioned by temporal politics and techniques of time measurement. They are interested in failing productivity and speed requirements, in stuttering and stumbling, in the fleeting, the ephemeral, and forgetting. In the exhibition, works by artists of different generations are related to each other, suggesting possibilities of connection across various time periods.

Contrary to what linear progress models suggest, it becomes apparent here that the present, future, and past are up for negotiation. Between the given and the impossible, between now and never, an open space of possibilities shimmers. Unfulfilled potentials of the past remain in time. Through sometimes small gestures and ordinary everyday practices, they can make a different future perceptible from the present.
