Something is better than nothing, or?
Offsite project organised by Halle für Kunst Lüneburg
September 18 – October 17, 2021
Rote Str. 1, 21335 Lüneburg
At the invitation of the Halle für Kunst, artist Angharad Williams has developed a new work in Lüneburg – a site-specific mural on the backwall of a former flower shop. A graphic translation of the question „Something is better than nothing, or?“ developed by the artist is reminiscent of both the visual language of poster advertising and the gestures of poster painting – now an almost extinct profession, poster painters created billboards or film posters for the exterior facades of cinemas until the 1980s.
The title of the exhibition derives from the initial web translation produced by the artist after coining the phrase „Etwas ist besser als nichts, oder?“ („Something is better than nothing, isn’t it?“) inspired by a German proverb. Williams kept the trace of this mechanical translation tool and the resulting grammatical incorrectness of the sentence, so that it is ‘lost in translation’. On a fundamental level, Williams’ installation questions the possibilities of access – to contemporary art, to a shared public space, to language – as well as proposing possible forms of interaction within in such spaces.
The installation will be open continuously and is accompanied by a text, which will be publicly performed by the artist. To attend the reading on September 27th, 2021, 4 p.m. please rsvp via info@halle-fuer-kunst.de.
The project is being organised as part of CON NEXT – Festival der Verbindungen 2021 and was made possible with support by Landkreis Lüneburg.
