The Unswept Floor
We are pleased to invite you to the presentation of Caterina De Nicola's video-based intervention conceived for Halle für Kunst Lüneburg and look forward to welcoming you to Halle für Kunst for the afternoon opening on Saturday, July 20, 2024 from 2 to 6 pm. The intervention takes up De Nicola’s performance, held in May 2024 at Doom Spa in Berlin and marks the second and final part of this project.
The Unswept Floor brings together the diverse aspects of the artist’s practice – from sonic performativity, spatial sculpture and, most recently, moving images. The video work evokes questions concerning the conditions of human communication and refers to the ways in which they are consumed by economic interests. The allegedly playful nature of expression or speech is increasingly revealed to be in unison with the market. De Nicola’s approach is animated by an underlying interest in the conditions of corporate appropriation of language. In the new work produced for Halle für Kunst, the artist not only reflects on the aestheticization of the media strategies that allure us on a daily basis, but also appropriates them as an artistic means and thus allows alternative moments of verbalizing beyond the spoken word to emerge.
Caterina De Nicola (*1991 in Ortona, IT; lives and works in Zurich, CH) is an artist and musician. In addition to fiction, writing and sound, her practice also involves working with objects and exploring their formal and discursive patterns while redefining them. A selection of recent solo exhibitions include: Reek of Past Pitfalls at Istituto Svizzero (Milan, 2023), Infedele at Baleno International (Rome, 2022), We Unleash Storms, Yet We Like The Sun at Last Tango (duo show, Zurich, 2022), Lonely Fans at Chickentown (Zurich, 2021), Embarrassed and Conciliatory at Il Colorificio (Milan, 2019).
